Long haul flight survival kit: contents

So I have mentioned this a little bit in our “Sunday” sevens series but here now is the complete blog post for it.

One of my close friends recently flew to Australia for a secondment and since that is an exceptionally long journey I decided for her birthday present I was going to create the ultimate long-haul flight survival kit. This post is going to talk about the contents of the kit as that is the simpler part to do, I also made a large bag to hold it all and a few smaller bags which I will cover in some other posts later on.

Obviously the contents of the kit might vary as to specific items that you want to have with you, however what I included in the kit is the following, which should cover most things you need:

Toiletries: Note any liquids, creams, pastes etc. must be under 100ml to be allowed through security

  • Toothpaste + toothbrush
  • Deodorant
  • Moisturiser
  • Hand Sanitiser
  • Lip balm
  • Eye drops
  • Small medical kit (see below)

  • Hairbrush + spare hairbands
  • Tissues
  • Wet wipes
  • Small quickdry towel (useful to have a quick wash)
  • Portable charger (this one also has a torch on it)
  • Slipper footlets
  • Mints and softmints
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Earplugs

In addition to the items I included in my kit I would also include some of the extra items in your hand luggage:

  • Earphones/headphones (preferably noise cancelling)
  • Book/eBook (for entertainment)
  • A large scarf (can double as a blanket)
  • A change of clothes
  • A travel pillow
  • A few snacks

Many of these items that are on this list you may already have in your house or bathroom, however if you need to get any of them you can pick up a fair number of them from places like poundland, primark or boots.

Below are the items I included in my kit (minus the water bottle). Once you have gathered the items together, the first thing to do is remove all unnecessary packaging so the items take up as little room as possible. Now the items take up significantly less room!

I picked up a rather useful plaster tin from Tiger which allowed me to make a little medical kit.

Into the tin I could fit: plasters, wound wipes, paracetamol, ibuprofen, indigestion tablets, toothpicks, earplugs and some chewing gum. This gives a decent first-aid kit in a small portable tin.

It is a useful idea to prepare for security by placing all liquids in a plastic bag, the rest of the items could be put into another bag which is easy to get to, such as a zip mesh bag, like this one below from IKEA.

I decided however to design and make my own bag to house the kit. This was designed to be able to hang from a seat in flight and allow easy access to the various compartments to store the items. I will talk about the construction of this bag in a later set of posts, as it had many stages.

You could also make or use existing little bags to hold a couple of items for easy access. This bag below has some earplugs, chewing gum, the charging cable for the powerblock, it could also hold earphones. (I will talk about some small bags that you can make in a later post)

I hope this helps anyone who is looking to make a survival kit for a long haul flight.

Thanks. I have a long haul later this year and I’m sure this information will be a good reminder of what will make it more comfortable

Hope it is useful for you. 🙂 I will try to get up some posts about the bags I made as well sometime soon.
