1989 Headband – Finished Knitting

I finally have another FO to show off, and this time there are actually two of them…

I have been back at work during January which is the earliest that I have been back at work for many years and when packing my kit up it dawned on me just how cold it would be! But I didn’t account for just how wet it was going to be but that is another story… When packing I decided I wanted a headband to keep my ears warm because at the moment I find that hats don’t tend to curl around and protect the ears enough, but I couldn’t find my normal headband so I decided to knit myself a new one. With a few days notice.

For headbands that are destined to be used in anger, I always tend to gravitate towards the headband section of the Christmas at Sea 1989 hat pattern. This is a double thickness garter stitch band which has a slip stitch folded edge on the bottom of the band and shaping to create ear flaps.

I knit up my new headband in King Cole Big Value Chunky in Fjord, as we had some of this in our stash and it is a very me colour. The only changes I make to the pattern are to reduce the number of rows before the ear flap shaping to reduce the overall size of the headband and slipping the edge stitches wyif which makes a much nicer edge.

I then stop knitting after it gets joined in the round where they start knitting the top of the hat. Here I just single crochet the two edges of the knitting together to finish the headband off, and then wear the heck out of it!

You can see that the top of the headband flares out slightly when it’s not worn but this is due to the sc not squishing down as much as the garter stitch, but if it was much smaller it wouldn’t stretch out enough when worn.

After making mine Nikki tried it on and nearly wouldn’t give it back! So it was decided that I had to make her another one so that I was allowed mine back again. In a lucky coincidence, we had just been gifted some of the same yarn from our neighbour so bright purple it was!

After I made the headband I made Nikki model it on her way out of the house to a meeting on Campus, yes it was that cold out :p

I have just found the pattern for that hat/headband on Ravelry. It will be perfect for winter walks so thank you so much for showing it!
I still use the woolly hat you knitted from my Stitching Santa frequently but sometimes you need ears covered and the top of your head out. I’ve never really understood why but it works so I’ll be knitting at least one of these

I totally agree on the hat vs headband front. Although a few weeks ago I did have my headband on under my hat!
Glad to have inspired you to try the pattern 🙂

It depends on the circumstances – I have been known to wear mine under a hat!
As 90% of the time I have my hair up, headbands are easier to wear, but not always warm enough I’ll agree
